Brooklyn in Love & at War

My grandparents' World War 2 Love Letters

Impatient wife and daughter are we! Sept 29, 1943 (Sylvia)

Ohhh, Popeye – a reference I get! A short and sweet note written in three parts from Sylvia about Adrienne’s new clothes and rattles, and her dreaming about Alex’s furlough.

2:30 Tuesday Afternoon

Dear Popeye the Sailorman –

I’m sitting on Tante’s porch with the baby this beautiful day thinking of you and Junior and your Furlough. Cookie loks seeter than usual today. Somehow she looks chubby. I don’t know if it is so or not, but her cheeks are flushed and she looks healthy and happy.

4:30

I bought her a new hat! Everyone (you, too) kept telling me she looked just like a boy, so I rushed madly to a baby stores and bought her a hat and does she look sweet! Like a little doll. Also, she now has 2 more pairs

Of pajamas (she can use lots more – so don’t get excited) and 2 pairs of long stockings and a dozen diapers. She looks so chubby and pink in the new pajamas! What a doll! I’ll take snapshots of her soon and send it to you. You’ll go crazy with joy.

8:30PM

Yesterday she received 2 Mexican rattles from Chicago – no name of sender. But I imagine it’s from Lida, who’s there now. They’re square and made of raffio (?) and very colorful and Cookie likes to look at them.

Today we received some new Year’s cards from your family – and we’re sending them some too. Cookie is sending an especially nice one to Mom and Pop.

I did all the infant’s things in the washing machine yesterday. It’s a wonderful thing – and babe, when we get our house in the country after thewar, we might have one too – ._..

(If this letter sound disconnected, it’s because I’m dead tired and want to hit the hay.l)

The news about their making you a Radar man or Pharmacists mate.

Sounds wonderful. How soon before you know definitely?

Received the postcard this afternoon, and Cookie and I laughed at it. I hope you haven’t forgotten how to make a diaper, sailor.

Well, the 9 days you’ll be here, we’ll make sure you won’t forget. When does your furlough start? Can’t wait for you to come home! Are we dying to see you in your snappy uniform! When comes your picture? Impatient wife and daughter are we!

Will write tomorrow

Love,

Puchke
