Today I’m sharing this short letter that Alex sent the first day he arrived at his training near Lake Geneva. He notes that no one else is writing a letter and he is exhausted. It seems like it was mailed the same day as the letter I will post tomorrow in which he mentions they didn’t have a mailman assigned yet. These are the letters Sylvia responded to in the previous post, noting that she received two letters in a day and was delighted.
Alex closes with a good outlook on a hard day: “The chief petty officer told us that today will be the hardest day in camp, and it is hard but if that is all then it means that I’ll be able to survive it.”
Dear sweetheart,
We got here and we have the pants (?)
I can’t describe it now I have only a few minutes to write. We didn’t sleep a wink in the train, some of the boys were wise guys. We went trough [sic] again the same thing that we went trough[sic] at the Induction Center with the difference we got 3 injections all at one time, and then so much work to get our clothes, our bunks to get our clothes all marked up with our names – [cut] off –

…make my bed, etc. The chief petty officer told us that today will be the hardest day in camp, and it is hard but if that is all then it means that I’ll be able to survive it. How baby and how do you manage?
Love to you, my dearest sweetheart and really believe me I am the only one who in our company is writing today.
I’ll write again tomorrow a long long leter because according to the boys we wil have more time.
This is my address:
